WI Campaigns and Community Involvement

WI campaigns are about changing things for the better and tackling the issues that matter to members. Members are at the heart of the WI and they play a central role in bringing issues onto the WI's national agenda through our public affairs and campaigning.

From equal pay to climate change, from gaps in the midwifery workforce to the plight of the honey bee, WI members have embraced a diverse set of challenges and built a reputation for the WI as a practical and ambitious organisation that doesn't shy away from tricky issues.

Our resolutions and mandates process means every campaign starts within our membership. Read more about the wide range of WI campaigns and some recent successes, and see our campaigning history through snapshots going back to 1926.

If you are a member of the WI you are able to submit ideas for future resolutions. Contact your committee for more information

Local Community Projects

Greenwich Foodbank: In February 2022 Blackheath and Greenwich WI resumed its support of Greenwich Foodbank with monthly contributions of food and other much needed household items.

CCRA (see https://www.charltonresidents.net) is a vibrant residents association situated near Charlton Station.  The Association, which has been going for over 15 years, has an extensive social programme that includes an event that truly brings the 'village into the city'.   It holds an annual traditional Flower, Craft and Produce Show that sees residents and children from the local school competing in over 70 categories that covers growing, baking, preserving, photography and crafting. As with any competition there has to be judging and, with fierce competition for prizes and the coveted Best in Show award, CCRA needed to have a robust system in place. Brenda Taggart, a CCRA member said in 2022, ‘From our first show, 10 years ago, having members of the Blackheath and Greenwich WI as judges has been a 'no brainer',  Who could provide the judging skills needed across such a wide range of entries? Who could provide guaranteed sound judgements? Who is sufficiently respected to head off any judging complaints?  Why only the WI. Our event simply could not go ahead without the involvement of the WI. We are so grateful to successive Presidents/Vice Presidents and members who give up their time to come and judge our Show.'Whilst you always take judging seriously we hope you find our F&P a fun event that you will continue to be a part of. Thank you WI for being such a fantastic asset to our community.’

Coldbath and Orchard Food Pantry: Since it launched in December 2023, members of the Blackheath and Greenwich WI have been involved in the organisation and running of the food pantry. The pantry was recently awarded a five-star rating at its first environmental health inspection.
