Spitalfields & the Huguenot Silk Weavers

Speaker - Sue Jackson

Welcomed at first with open arms and bringing luxury skills, the Huguenots’ fortunes fluctuated wildly.   This talk is about their early 18th century houses, how they were decorated and who lived in them.  We take a look at the fashionable patterned silk dresses and who designed and made them. Finally, how the trade died out, with some weavers literally dying in poverty at their looms.

Door will be open at 7.00pm for a 7.30pm start.

Due to an almost full membership and high attendance rates we are now restricted to 5 visitors per meeting. Please contact our Secretary Christine Dickinson (07709 553 927) to put your name on the door.

We urge all potential visitors to get in touch with us prior to attending a meeting. This way we can ensure we don't exceed our room capacity. Many thanks.
